The Functioning Shipwreck

The Functioning Shipwreck, Brighton, UK

Interior Architecture BA (Hons), University of Brighton - 2013

My proposal is a creative learning centre for the study of nautical charts and nautical navigation tools. The Functioning Shipwrecks (i.e. the view towers’ design) takes advantage of the spectacular views from New England House, and allows the people to perceive the landscape on multiple levels. With several different components, such as parasitic classrooms, drawing hubs and map storage, it inspires for an unique way of teaching the methods behind nautical maps, providing an imaginative environment for people that want to advance their skills. My design has throughout the process had strong links with mapping and navigation. By analysing different collaborations, narratives and navigation tools, doing site surveying and by researching Brighton’s sea and fishing industry, my conceptual ideas have developed into features in my finished design. This can easily be seen in the decision about shading, location, materials and colours.

“Cartography Is the study and practice of making maps. Combining science, aesthetics, and technique, cartography builds on the premise that reality can be modelled in ways that communicate spatial information effectively.” - Rikka Tauriainen
