Geology Research Centre, Hveragerði, Iceland
Architectural Studies, University of Brighton - Sept 2015 - June 2017
To broaden my architectural & technical knowledge I participated in research lead course on a part time basis. This course is a part of the arts & humanities department at University of Brighton & encourages students to investigate a personal architectural agenda & language, as well as to develop critical thinking. Through studio laboratories driven by tutors, different urban or peri-urban context & landscapes within the UK & internationally were explored. Technology, environmental data, social data & sustainable objectives were also taken into account whilst exploiting an interplay between thinking, making & drawing.
Thesis question:
How can we take advantage of the immediate natural surroundings to create adaptive, responsive, sustainable and yet well designed architecture that celebrates and expresses the chosen location?
Narrative:
The proposal is for a geology research centre with facilities to analyses rock samples, deliver seminars and storage data & samples. A green house will also be included in the proposal, feeding energy from the geothermal activity found on site. The suggested building will adapt to the fluctuate and extreme weather conditions, having materials and architectural experiences that appear to change throughout the day and seasons. I plan to place this establishment both above and below ground, to take advantage of the extreme differences in character throughout the site.
